Our musical THE TEARS OF LA LLORONA received praise at the SheLA Festival in July and will have two more workshop performances at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles October 29 and November 2 thanks to an Eastside Arts Initiative Grant. This follows our commission from Theater Latté Da in Minneapolis where we workshopped and developed the piece. For more information, see the Broadway World announcement.
SYNOPSIS: Resurrected from the dead, Llorona seeks vengeance for her untimely murder but fate creates uncertainty after chance encounters with the living turns her pain into love.
Set 100 years ago along the US/Mexico border, The Tears of La Llorona reimagines the infamous tale of the Weeping Woman stealing children in the night through a band of mariachi women who guide us through her origin story.
STYLE: Music is a blend of Mariachi, Mexican regional music, and classic Americana folk.
PERFORMANCES: Tears of La Llorona is being performed at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes thanks to our receiving an Eastside Arts Initiative Grant.
COMPENSATION: $250 for all rehearsals, tech, and performances
TIME COMMITMENT/LOCATIONS:
Music rehearsals: scheduled individually in October. Location can be at your place.
Staging rehearsals and technical rehearsals: October 25-28, 2025 based on group availability between 10:00am-7:30pm. All rehearsals are likely to be at La Plaza.
Performances at La Plaza:
- October 29 at 7:00 p.m. (call time TBA)
- November 2 at 2:00 p.m. (call time TBA)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Memorization: We are required to present a fully memorized staged production. You will need to come to the staging rehearsals in October fully memorized.
Costumes: all black attire provided by performers’ closets. Specialty items will be provided by the producers.
Props: will be minimal and provided by the producers.
